26410 Châtillon-en-Diois

Châtillon-en-Diois has much to offer to the visitor: Nature is generous with le Glandasse Mountain and the river Bez. Vineyards surround the locality and a botanical trail span across the village. The town also offers a good representation of traditional architecture with its narrow medieval streets and houses.

At 570 m of altitude, surrounded by one of France’s highest vineyards, Châtillon-en-Diois is gathered around a rocky outcrop and its castle. On hot summer days, you will enjoy the refreshing breeze of its fountains with their haiku poems and the well-kept botanical trail featuring creeping and ground-cover plants. Visit also the dedicated space presenting the signature plant of the region: the original vines still used today in AOC wine production.

Imagine for a second…The traditional houses of the village stretching their Roman tilled roof high towards Glandasse sharp cliffs…Delightful narrow medieval streets called ‘viols’; the village has in fact inspired the author Jean Giono and recently the French film ‘Knock’ was shot in Châtillon…

Along the Rostangs street, protected by its fortified gate and the Clock Tower one can still imagine the lively rural and commercial life of the village in days gone by... Lift your eyes and your will see frescoes adorning the facades of the Town Hall…

Châtillon was a Protestant Land but persecution was rife…So an upside-down shutter gong at the window was a sign of a friendly house for a Protestant refugee in the darkest hours of history…
Today the International Huguenots Hiking Trail goes through the village.
