The commune of Pailharès is situated in the high part of the catchment area of the Daronne River. The catchment area is the whole area of land that collects water to feed into a river and its tributaries. It is a sort of funnel, through which the lattice (all the streams) is swallowed up into the river. There are frontiers; lines where the waters join to naturally follow the mountain ridges. Precipitation on the slopes of the mountain concentrates into streams to finally join the Daronne, which itself feeds into the Doux, a tributary of the Rhône. Sometimes water also finds its way into the rock to make underground aquifers, then to re-emerge as innumerable springs that feed into the streams. These streams are very easy to spot, thanks to the specific water-loving vegetation around them, such as reeds, rushes, birch (easily recognised by its white bark), alder and willow, to mention but a few.
