Our district was distinguished by the presence of a missionary in the 4th Century. The missionary was Saint Just, the mythical figure whose memory lives on to this day in the Haut-Vivarais region. The Chapel of Saint Just is in Arlebosc. Inside is a statue of a bishop
with some children in a pool of water. The legend of the statue is as follows: Saint Just met some pagans indulging in the sacrifice of children. By making the sign of the cross he destroyed the blood-soaked altars and brought the unhappy young victims back to life. He baptised them immediately in a miraculous spring that began flowing at his feet. The Chapel of Saint Just was built in memory of this miracle.A few hundred metres away, at the ‘Col du Perrier’, are the Meyres rocks; stones bearing imprints in the shape of ‘little cradles’. Legend has it that babies were sacrificed to these perceived goddesses of fertility at this spot. Each year on the Monday after Pentecost, right up to the 20th Century, a procession would be made to this place in memory of Saint Just who put a halt to the
sacrifice of pagan children here.

If you would like to go into the Chapel, please ask the farmer in the hamlet for the key.
