Discovery tour of Suze la Rousse

Le village26790 Suze-la-Rousse

Could the flamboyant ginger color of Marguerite des Baux’s hair bear the origin of the name « La Rousse » ? Or perhaps the warm shades of the stone ? One thing we can be sure of is that the town’s castle staged many eventful moments since its construction in the 12th century. Throughout its history, the town stood as a symbol of duality of powers. Seigneurial powers on the one hand with the fortified castle and religious power on the other hand with its church and its bell tower. Shaped by everlasting conflicts between the kingdom of France and its rivals from Provence, a visit to Suze-La-Rousse gives the visitor a vivid insight into the history of France.

The Castle :
A medieval fortress set in a huge wooded park of Mediterranean species known as « la garenne », the castle also features one of France’s most magnificient Renaissance inner courtyard. Standing at the heart of prestigious rolling vineyards and as the headquarters of the University of Wine, it offers a discovery trail dedicated to the art, the science and the history of winemaking,
The University of Wine :

Local Wine :
Wine growing has always played an important role in the history of Suze-a-Rousse, perfectly suited with hillsides of clay and limestone stony soils. It boasts several unique « appellations » or controlled designation of origin such as Côtes-du-Rhône, Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages and Grignan-les-Adhémar as well as a protected geographical label.
